What are the commandments of the New Covenant?

The New Covenant is a central concept in the Christian faith. It refers to the agreement or relationship between God and humanity established by Jesus Christ in the New Testament. The exact nature of the New Covenant is a matter of much debate and interpretation within Christianity, but it is widely understood to involve a profound transformation in the relationship between God and humanity, made possible by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

In terms of specific commandments or laws, there is no comprehensive list of commandments that applies specifically to the New Covenant. However, there are several principles and teachings in the New Testament that are often considered central to the New Covenant and the Christian faith, including:

Love God and love your neighbor: Jesus summarized the entire law of Moses as two commandments: to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40). Many Christians consider this commandment to be the cornerstone of the New Covenant, and it emphasizes the importance of putting love for God and others at the center of one’s life.

Follow Jesus: Jesus himself is the centerpiece of the New Covenant, and Christians are called to follow him and his teachings in their daily lives. This involves not only reading and studying the teachings of Jesus but also striving to imitate his character and behavior in one’s own life.

Live by the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is believed by Christians to be the source of new life and power in the New Covenant, and believers are encouraged to allow the Spirit to guide and transform them from within. This involves yielding control of one’s life to the Holy Spirit and seeking to be led by the Spirit in all aspects of one’s life.

Serve others: Jesus taught that true greatness in the kingdom of God comes from serving others rather than being served (Matthew 20:25-28). This principle encourages Christians to look for ways to serve and help others and to put the needs of others before their own.

Forgive others: Jesus taught that forgiveness is a central aspect of the New Covenant and that believers are called to forgive others as God has forgiven them (Matthew 6:14-15). This involves letting go of grudges, anger, and resentment and seeking to reconcile with others even when it is difficult.

Love your enemies: Jesus taught that true love and compassion extend even to one’s enemies and that believers are called to love and pray for those who persecute them (Matthew 5:44). This principle challenges Christians to extend love and compassion to those who are hostile or harmful to them and to seek to bring reconciliation and healing to broken relationships.

These are just a few of the teachings and principles central to the New Covenant and the Christian faith. While the nature and interpretation of the New Covenant can vary from one Christian tradition to another, these teachings are widely considered essential aspects of the Christian life. They represent a way of life centered on love for God and others and on striving to follow the example and teachings of Jesus in all areas of one’s life.
