The Way of Jesus – Teachings of the Apostles for today

The Didache, Jesus’ Teaching Through the Twelve Apostles, with Commentary, New Covenant Translation

What is it?

The Way of Jesus – Teachings of the Apostles for today, New Covenant Translation is a manual, or guide, for the Philosophy of Jesus and church practice. The first part of the text sets forth the two ways, or paths, of life or death. The first path is a pattern for living the Philosophy of Jesus, and the second is what to avoid. The church practice part of the text gives instructions on baptism, the Eucharist (Communion), fasting, prayer, and other church matters. It concludes with a brief description of the Kingdom of Heaven. Find out if first-century followers’ Jesus philosophy matches Progressive Christianity today.

Where did it come from?

A document from the late first or early second century, The Didache, or Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, is cited as Scripture by a few church fathers. However, it did not make the cut into the New Testament canon during the Nicene council. Lost to the church for centuries, until rediscovered in 1873 in the Codex Hierosolymitanus by Philotheos Bryennios. Then “lost” again by the protestant revolution and anti-catholic evangelicalism.

Why was it written?

Jesus Christ is the only man who lives indeed and in the hearts of billions of people. He is sent to us by God as a guide so that humanity mends our waywardness, redeems ourselves, and lives beautiful lives. His words and deeds continue to resonate even after two millennia. In the grand scheme of things, this depicts God’s unconditional love towards us, that we soften our hearts and bask in His glory and mercy.

What Translation?

The Gospel of Jesus Christ, New Covenant Translation (Available Here), is so simply and beautifully written that it allows us to intimately and profoundly know Jesus and our Loving Father. Each of its words is carefully chosen to articulate its eloquence without compromising the gist of the original text. A key goal of this work is to foster a personal bond between the eternal God and us to savor the lessons of Jesus and fall in love with him anew each day.

This book updates to modern language and context the first-century work. Time will tell if this rendering brings the Didache back as Scripture in Progressive Christianity.
